Sea and Smoke, a peaceful piece, invites the viewer to move across time and space to ponder the now and the future. The pier’s simple repetitive structure provides the tunnel through which the viewer travels.
The image was created in 2015 at San Diego’s Scripps Pier. Arriving in the mid-afternoon, I waited several hours for twilight and the tide. The photograph is a single six-minute exposure photographed with a tripod buried in the sand as the ocean steadily encroached. The long exposure captured several waves and ocean sprays creating the ethereal “smoke” of the water.
