Contrasting what is made by nature against what is made by human hands, Within the Gorge is an image for which I have great affection as it concisely illustrates the contrasts and juxtapositions of subject and tone prevalent in my work. In the photo, rock and foliage lead the viewer endlessly into the natural while immobile stairs serve as a visual comment on the sum of human endeavor.
I recall creating this image vividly and fondly. The scene was my last subject from an early morning descent into the gorge at Watkins Glen, NY. I worked quickly, knowing the sun could dramatically change the tone of the light in the scene at any moment. The light was perfect and I did not want to lose it. This was my first, and favorite, of a mere seven exposures of this scene.
The mount is frameless and elegant, allowing the image to float on the wall. –>
